1st District Court of Appeals Judge Pat Fischer

Judge Pat Fischer of Cincinatti gave an overview of why the general public should do their research when it comes to judicial elections.

The judge gave various scenarios such as divorce, adoption, criminal sentencing and parental termination, explaining that these can only be handled by judges. However, he noted that people don't often know who they are voting for when they cast their votes in judicial elections. Ohio judges see over 1.5 million cases each year, and each case personally affects someone.

As a result, a number of organizations came together to form JudicialVotesCount.org, a compendium of information about each judge up for election. For more information, or for information on the judges in your community, please visit blogs.akron.edu/JudicialVotesCount.org.

Literacy Projects

Deb Liptak presented two opportunities to participate in literacy projects around the community.

Project MORE at Market Street Elementary is a hands-on literacy project that requires one hour of mentoring and tutoring special needs children. There will be two training sessions: Jan. 13 at 9 a.m. and Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. The project will last through the school year.

Little Free Library:will be built and installed by Boardman Park. Volunteers are needed to monitor the library. Volunteers would check the box regularly to assure that books are always stocked in the little free library, and that all content is appropriate for all ages.

Dues and Attendance

A reminder that all outstanding dues from the first half of 2015-2016 are due by Thursday, Dec. 31.

All dues for the second half of 2015-2016 are due by Sunday, Jan. 31. Invoices for the second half dues were issued on Tuesday, Dec. 1 via email, and hard copies of the invoices will be sent via USPS in the coming week.

Please take note of the attendance policies as outlined in the bylaws and constitution of the club, and make sure that all makeup slips are turned into Mason Shattuck. Copies of the bylaws were handed out during the Dec. 1 meeting.
