At Tuesday's meeting, Denise Tomko of Home Instead Senior Care spoke to the club about Alzheimer's disease, which affects more than 3 million people each year, and impacts cognitive function and spatial reasoning. Using her own experiences with her mother, she illustrated the difficulties and challenges of caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. She also presented some of the myths that accompany the diseases, including:
Myth: Dementia and Alzheimer's is just normal aging. Fact: Alzheimer's and dementia are not due to normal aging. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions.
Myth: There are medicines that will prevent or cure Alzheimer's disease. Fact: There is no cure or prevention, but doctors and experts are working to treat the symptoms, and use therapies and supportive services for individuals with Alzheimer's.
The Operation Warm kick-off will held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5:30, at Trax Lounge "Paradise Patio," 4250 New Road, Austintown. It's a special event, and all Rotarians from Division 1A clubs are invited! $5 will get you in the door, and a chance to win a $100 Visa giftcard door prize.
There will be an Oktoberfestival meeting on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 8 a.m. The meeting will take place at Burgan Real Estate's lower level conference center. There are many details to still put together and ideas to develop.
The annual Boardman Rotary Foundation meeting will take place immediately following the regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015. The main purpose will be to elect officers and members at large and to review the financials of the foundation's account.
