Program for 9/4: United Way
Brenda Scott, Community Impact Manager, joined our club today to discuss the initiatives at United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley.

United Way’s Success After 6 focuses on the whole child and the whole family by providing wraparound services. The program launched in 2015 at the Youngstown Community School, went to Taft Elementary School in its second year, and in 2017-2018 expanded to include 8 total schools — 5 in Youngstown City Schools District, Girard Elementary School, W.S. Guy Middle School, and Youngstown Community School (YCS).

SA6 aimes to provide supplemental academic tools and positive enrichment opportunities to students who may not have the opportunity to experience this additional help.

  • Success After 6 students are closing the achievement gap thanks to the program
  • 350 students receive new eye glasses
  • 19,000 meals were served at the after-school program
  • 74% of students in Youngstown maintained or improved their reading and math grades
  • 95% attendance rate for SA6 students
  • 39% of YCS Success After 6 students are on Honor Roll
  • 61% of Girard Success After 6 students taking part in Project MORE improved their reading skills by at least 2 levels
This Friday, September 7th, United Way’s Day of Caring is taking place. The United Way Day of Caring officially kicks off the annual campaign with a breakfast and hands-on volunteer opportunities.  United Way partners with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, City of Youngstown, and the American Red Cross to complete the City's largest "Fight Blight" project of the year.  More than 800 volunteers sign up for the Day of Caring with 600 of those volunteers working on the YNDC/ City of Youngstown Project.  The rest of the volunteers go to United Way's partner agencies throughout Mahoning County. To register to volunteer, head over to https://www.ymvunitedway.org/day-caring
